So most of the morning was spent speaking with Sandra about the school, the students, their families, and living on the island. And I have some bad news right now: once you are on Diomede you are stuck :( unless you wanna pay an insane amount of money to get on and off. But I guess getting off the island isn't that bad, it's getting back onto the island that's tricky. Oh well, at least I have three weeks off for Christmas and from what I've heard from other staff members that's roller coaster of its own and not a fun one. Oh well we'll see how it goes. All I can say is this is going to be a challenging year and it's either gonna make me stronger or break me. I'm gonna go with A on that one.
After speaking with Sandra, Jori and I decided to go for a walk around Unalakleet. It kinda looks like a shanty town, just based on the shape and make of the buildings. It's a cute little place. The ocean is right there and there's just so much to take in that a picture only captures half of the beauty. Then after the walk the rest of the day was kinda lazy time and other teachers were coming in so I've met more people from all over and actually a couple I met already in Minneapolis at the job fair, small world!
But the best part of the day happened around 4:30 with the next Era Alaska flight came in! My suitcases came in!!!! So I got new clothes and a shower, it was wonderful!!! Plus to make it even better I got to hold a little Eskimo baby named Matya (Ma-tie-ya). She was so cute and was such a good baby; we were passing her around between the four of us and she would just smile and play with our name tags or my hoodie strings. I know I love babies, but how can I not; I'm an Early Childhood Teacher!
After the baby holding I decided to go for another walk, this time on the other end of town by the airport. I'm so glad I did because it was so pretty! Just looking at the countryside was gorgeous! Words can't describe it.

Little Mayata (My-ya-ta)
Wow Cat! It sure has been quite the adventure so far! I am sure it will go great. It looks absolutely beautiful up there. I am very glad you got all of your stuff and didn't have to go grubby for too long. So, if you never get off, how do you get all of your supplies? Is there a hair dresser, and dentist and such on the island? I can't wait to hear more about it.
